This essential handbook presents detailed monographs for approximately 270 commonly used herbal products and natural supplements. Arranged in alphabetical order, each monograph incorporates authoritative information on generic names, botanical names, common alternative and trade names, actions, origins, uses and investigational uses, dosages, side effects and adverse reactions, contraindications and precautions with explanations, pharmacokinetics, chemical components, and interactions with foods, other herbal products, and with drugs. Both the FDA's and the American Herbal Product Association's safety information is noted for each herb where appropriate; in addition, all critical information is highlighted by design and special Aalert@ icons for ease of location. Each monograph also includes any special considerations, such as client/family education and monitoring, suggested alternative therapies, and information on the popularity and use of the product within the United States. In addition, an introductory chapter familiarizes the reader with current issues of limited research, supply, harvest, manufacture, storage, shelf-life, and special population considerations for usage of herbals and supplements in general. Numerous appendices include information on chemical classes of herbal components, disorders various herbals are commonly used to treat (including cancer and HIV), useful web-links, a glossary of herbal terms, an explanation of the two most common safety rating systems for herbs, and a table of herb-drug class interactions. A comprehensive index allows users to search for herbs and natural supplements by any of the common, trade or botanical names.
